snapshots of aerial combat not achievable with the camera. - The artist's
detailed narrative describes the background to each painting, his methods

Years of Aviation Art by Frank Wootton by Frank Wootton, Frank Wootton
(Illustrator), Air Chief Marshal Sir Neil Wheeler GCB CBE DSO DFC AFC .
Vanwell Pub Ltd; ISBN: 1550680730 |
 |
The
collection of aircraft depicted in this book celebrates 50 years of painting
by Frank Wootton, who has work hanging in private and public collections
worldwide, including the Imperial War Museum in London and the National
Air and Space Museum in Washington. Wootton matured as a painter during
the frantic years of World War II, when he travelled the world as an official
war artist to the Royal Air Force. In 1944 he joined the Allied forces
advancing in Europe, through newly-liberated France and into Belgium, painting
the events and aircraft around him. Some months later he was moved to South-East
Asia, where he experienced the final stages of the war with Japan. There
he painted many works of life in the tropics - a world of sandstorms, intense
heat and monsoon rains. His subjects included the routines of daily life,
alongside images of pilots and their aircraft at war.

| Gerald
Coulson: the Masterworks by John Blake, David Shepherd, Gerald Coulson
(Introduction). David & Charles; ISBN:0715398695 |
 |
Gerald
Coulson's first love was not art, but aircraft, and from an early age he
studied and drew them at every opportunity. His apprenticeship - in the
RAF, then as a civilian aircraft engineer and as a pilot - has stood him
in good stead in subsequent years, for he paints from an intimate knowledge
of the machines. More recently he has expanded his repertoire into landscape,
concentrating on the accurate interpretation of features such as mist,
foliage and water. This book contains many of Coulson's best-known paintings
as well as a number of hitherto unpublished works.

Boys
Own Battle of Britain. Peter Cross (Illustrator). Pavilion Books
Ltd; ISBN:
1851453784 |
 |
In
a fun-packed celebration of the Battle of Britain, artist Peter Cross recounts
the events of the summer of 1940 in a series of paintings. He depicted
"our finest hour" as the last great "Boy's Own" adventure restaging it
as a home match in which the swinnish bovver boys of St Hitla's take on
the underdog home team of our lads from Biggin Hill School. As the match
proceeds the reader will meet the leaders of both sides - the home team's
shrewd senior housemaster Mr Dowdy and respected headmaster , Mr Winston,
and the opposition's fiendish Mr Adolfus and loathsome Fatty Goering. Although
the competition is fierce and the weaponry formidable - Spitfire bicycles
and the Meshermschmitt motor mowers - in the end at the final whistle,
"the few" are victorious. Peter Cross has also illustrated "Trouble for
Trumpets" and "And All This"
