b/w photos, 40 color. To counter the Spitfire, as 1941 progressed Messerschmitt
updated and improved the fighter. During 194142 over 2000 were built, before
production switched to the most durable of all wartime Bf 109sthe Gustav.
Of the eight distinct sub-types within the huge Bf 109 family, the most
populous was the G-model, of which a staggering 30,000+ were built between
194145. A variety of integral and podded machine guns and cannon of various
caliber were in use with the Gustav, as were unguided rockets and mortars.
To standardize all these sub-variants, Messerschmitt produced the K-model,
which remained in production through to wars end. Pilots of the caliber
of Galland, Mlders, Br and Knocke all enjoyed great success with the later
variants of the Bf 109, firstly during Channel and anti-Circus and Ramrod
operations in 1941-42, and then on Defense of the Reich duties through
to the spring of 1945. .

Falcons: the Aces of the Red Star. By Tomas Polak and Christopher Shores,
Grub Street; ISBN: 1902304012. Our Price: £29.75 RRP: |
 |
Between
1918 and 1953 Soviet fighter pilots were involved in no less than ten separate
air wars of varying length and intensity. During the period from June 1941
to May 1945, Soviet fighters were credited with more aerial victories than
any of the other Allied nations. The most successful Soviet pilots of the
various conflicts include Ivan Kozhedub, Grigorii Rechkalov, Alexandr Pokryshkin,
Nikolai Gulayev, Kirill Yevstigneyev and Nikolai Shutt, each of whom was
credited with more than 50 individual successes. This book includes brief
biographies of more than 1000 pilots and of the fighter regiments they
served. The Soviet unit structures, decorations, and wartime operations
to which they relate are detailed, together with explanatory maps and illustrations
of the aircraft. Aerial engagements from the Civil War to the Korean War
are covered.

| Japanese
Navy Air Force Aces 1937-1945. By Henry Sakaida, Mark Styling (Illustrator).
Osprey; ISBN: 1855327279. Our Price: £10.39. RRP: |
 |
The
outcome of the Pacific War was heavily influenced by the results of naval
battles between the Imperial Japanese fleet and the US Navy. One of the
key weapons of the former force was its large fighter component, which
had gained valuable experience supporting bombing sorties on Manchuria,
China and Mongolia in the late 1930s. Flying A5M Claudes, at least 21 pilots
achieved 'acedom' whilst securing total air superiority for the invading
Japanese forces. Manufacturer Mitsubishi derived much from these
limited campaigns,
and subsequently produced one of the best fighters on eighter side during
World War 2, the A6M Zero-Sen. Employing this fighter to telling effect,
navy pilots proved to be both relentless and highly skilled when engaged
by the Allied forces that attempted to stop the Japanese invasion of the
Pacific. Pilots like Nishizawa, Iwamoto, Sagita and Sakai cach scored more
than 60 kills apiece, dominating the skies until well into 1943. The tide
of war slowly shifted following a series of key carrier battles, forcing
navy pilots to operate predominantly from shore bases in New Guinea, The
Philippines and finally the Japanese home islands. New fighter types like
the Raiden, Shiden/Shiden-kai, Gekko and later versions of the Zero only
helped delay the inevitable defeat of Japan, and hundreds of naval pilots
paid the ultimate price in the final months of war as kamikazes.

| Hurricane
Aces 1939-40. By Tony Holmes. Osprey., ISBN: 1855325756. Our Price: £10.39
RRP: |
 |
The
Hawker Hurricane was the Raf's first monoplane fighter, and it dragged
the air force into a position where it could defend Britain in its 'hour
of need'. Prior to the Battle of Britain, a number of squadrons equipped
with the fighter had seen action firstly in the 'Phoney War', and then
during the disastrous campaign in France. Pilots like 'Cobber' Kain had
achieved impressive scores in the face of overwhelming Luftwaffe forces,
and although the RAF lost no less than 386 Hurricanes during the Blitzkrieg,
it gave many pilots valuable experience. Hawker fighters outnumbered Spitfires
during the Battle of Britain by three to one, and downed far mor aircraft.
Overseas, a handful of pilots put up stiff resistance against Germany's
Italian ally in Libya and Egypt, and also over Malta.

| Hellcat
Aces of World War 11 : Aircraft of the Aces 10 by Barrett Tillman. Osprey
Pub Co; ISBN: 1855325969 |
 |
An
excellent reference work. Grumman's successor to the pugnacious Wildcat,
the Hellcat embodied many of the lessons learnt by F4F pilots in the opening
months of the Pacific war. Introduced to the fleet in January 1943, and
blooded in combat against the Japanese by VF-5 seven months later, the
F6F served as the principal US Navy fighter on board carrier decks until
VJ-Day. Despite its lethality in the air when ranged against the best Japanese
fighters, it still retained docile handling qualities around the carrier
deck. Pilots flying the Hellcat claimed nearly 5000 kills in the Pacific,
and over 350 pilots achieved ace status on the type.
