| The
morning sky over southern Ontario reverberates once more to the unmistakable
roar of Pratt & Whitney radial engines as the MkII and the MkIV Harvards
of the CANADIAN HARVARD AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION make a pass over their home
base in Tillsonburg, Ontario. I have enjoyed being a member for several
years. This non-profit organization of aviation lovers is dedicated to
the preservation of our aviation heritage.

| This
is a painting of the very last combat of WWII, which took place over Tokyo
Bay on 15th August 1945. Sub Lt Gerry Murphy shot down two Zeros "in turning
combat which should have favoured the enemy", with "some fine deflection
shooting". The painting shows Gerry Murphy's Seafire III in the Royal Navy's
Pacific markings. This was the last air combat of WWII, but I wonder if
it might also be the last air to air combat (as distinct from reconnaissance
or ground attack missions) flown by a 'Spitfire'.The full story of the
combat, and the background to it, has been written by Mark Huggins, and
was published in the June 2001 issue of Aeroplane Monthly. This print celebrates
these two outstanding examples of inspired aircraft design, and is dedicated
to all those who fought in WWII in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm.

By 1941
the Curtiss Hawk (P-36) was considered obsolete, and the Army Air Corps
was replacing it with Hawk's faster offspring, the P-40 Warhawk...relegating
the P-36 to training roles. Still, in the hands of a determined pilot like
2nd Lt. Harry W. Brown, the Hawk could be a dangerous adversary. Lt. Brown,
who went on to become the first "Ace" of the newly formed all P-38 475th
Fighter Group, is seen here pulling away from his second victory on that
Day of Infamy. Harry W. Brown shot down two Japanese "Kate" bombers over
Kaena Point on Oahu, becoming one of the first U.S. pilots to shoot down
an enemy aircraft upon the United States' entry into World War II.
