Durnan's Aviation Art Hangar and cartoons. Our price: SOLD

 |
| I
remember watching Sea Furies at the Canadian International Exhibition air
show and hearing the distinctive whistle as they flew low along the lakeshore.
The Sea Furies here are flying over their sea-going home, HMCS Magnificent.
The "Maggie" was Canada's aircraft carrier from 1948 to 1957. For more
info on the RCN Fleet Air Arm read the books "Hands to Flying Stations
Vol. 1 and 2" by L/Cdr Stuart Soward CD RCN(ret).

| My
friend, Norm Struthers, was a telegraphist air gunner with the Royal Navy
Fleet Air Arm during WW2. He was part of the crew of a Grumman Avenger
( 820 Squadron A/C No.JZ595-pilot, John Baggs - observer, Don Withers )from
HMS Indefatigable that took part in the raid on the oil refineries
at Palembang, Sumatra on January 24, 1945. They had to dive through fighters
,flak and barrage balloons to strike the targets. Corsairs and Fireflies
provided fighter cover and attacked the Japanese airfields. The raid was
a success and it denied much needed petroleum products to the Japanese
military. Norm survived, is alive and well and beats me regularly at tennis.
The raiders were part of the British Pacific Fleet which was known as the
"Forgotten Fleet" and it was very difficult to find photos to assist me
with the painting.

"Harvards
Up Early" By Lance Russwurm © 1994. Lance
Russwurm Studio.
|
 |
| The
morning sky over southern Ontario reverberates once more to the unmistakable
roar of Pratt & Whitney radial engines as the MkII and the MkIV Harvards
of the CANADIAN HARVARD AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION make a pass over their home
base in Tillsonburg, Ontario. I have enjoyed being a member for several
years. This non-profit organization of aviation lovers is dedicated to
the preservation of our aviation heritage.
