Recollections - The Recollections of Outstanding Survivors of Canada's
Wartime Navy. Set 1.
No.1 DeWolf - No.2 Sherwood - No.3 Nixon - No.4 O'Brien
Set 1 of a series of 6 videos interviewing
outstanding Canadians. Each set is about one hour long and generally focusses
on one Canadian naval leaders story from World War II.
Vice Admiral Harry G. DeWolf CBE DSO DSC RCN tells
of life as a teenage cadet just after World War I. he was in command of
HMCS St. Laurent - early in World War II. He also tells of the events surrounding
the loss of HMCS Atahbaskan and of Haida's part in the rescue of some of
her crew.
Lieut. Commander Fred H. Sherwood DSC & Bar RCNVR
- his
first submarine command was "P556", a very old ex-US
Navy submarine he nicknamed 'The Reluctant Dragon' because frequently,
she didn't want to dive! Then given command of HMS Spiteful - a brand new
boat - he sailed her out into the Pacific war. Sherwood is the only
Canadian who commanded a submarine in ops in W.W.II
Captain C. Patrick Nixon DSC MID RCN - spent 3 years
continuously at sea in HMCS St Laurent and after a brief recess ashore
returned to command the destroyer HMCS Chaudiere and later HMCS Crescent.
Chaudiere took part in sinking 3 U-boats which he describes in detail.
Vice Admiral John C. (Scruff) O'Brien OC RCN - He vividly
reports one morning in December '40 when HMCS Saguenay was torpedoed 300
miles west of Ireland. He recounts life aboard the aircraft carrier HMCS
Magnificent and concludes with a tribute to Canada's Naval Aviators.

Recollections - The Recollections of Outstanding Survivors of Canada's
Wartime Navy. Set 4.
No.1 Commodore G.C. Edwards, No.2 Rear Admiral
R.W. Timbrell , No 3. Rear Admiral R. John Pickford , No. 4 Rear
Admiral William Moss Landymore
Set 4 of a series of 6 videos interviewing
outstanding Canadians. Each set is about one hour long and generally focusses
on one Canadian naval leaders story from World War II.
No.1. Commodore G.C. Edwards - His first sea experience
comes defending coastal convoys through the English Channel after which,
he starts pilot training in England and later Canada. Next comes
operational training in Swordfish Torpedo Bombers the “Workhorses of the
Fleet”, which he describes as being almost a World War I aircraft. Ted
would have preferred tohave filled this interview with colourful stories
but the interviewer insists on bringing him back to the serious
aspects of his wartime experiences. Almost
reluctantly, Ted provides a few details of some really chilling
moments. However he prefers to keep it light - while not leaving
any doubt of the dangers of wartime flying from small carriers. The
video is laced with movie footage of the times and many of Ted’s own photographs.
Filmed at his residence in Ottawa in May 1997 and interviewed by fellow
naval aviator Patrick Whitby,

Recollections - The Recollections of Outstanding Survivors of Canada's
Wartime Navy. Set 5.
Set 5 of a series of 6 videos interviewing
outstanding Canadians. Each set is about one hour long and generally focusses
on one Canadian naval leaders story from World War II.
Set 5 No. 4
Rear Admiral Charles J Dillon CD - served aboard the carrier HMS Nabob
from commissioning to action in “Operation Goodwood” in the attacks against
the German batleship TIRPITZ and her miraculous return from Norway after
being torpedoed. Dillon stayed on in the Regular Force after the war and
the remaining narrative exposes us to these years ... ending as he and
his colleagues become the concluding members of Canada’s last Naval Board.
Much of the flavour of this documentary comes from Dillon’s old photos
and also from personal movies taken by Admiral H.G. DeWolf. An unexpected
find was discovery (in the National Archive) of Admiral Nelson Lay’s colour
movies in HMS Nabob Another added treat is the pre-war movies taken
aloft in HMCS Venture under sail and contributed by Captain R. L. Lane
Other interviews with -
Lt.Cdr.C.A.(Bones) Burk, Lt. Ross Campbell and Lt.Cdr.Thomas

Recollections - The Recollections of Outstanding Survivors of Canada's
Wartime Navy. Set 6.
No.1 Two Prisoners of War
Set 6 of a series of 6 videos interviewing
outstanding Canadians. Each set is about one hour long and generally focusses
on one Canadian naval leaders story from World War II.
No.1 Two Prisoners of War Part 1: Rear Admiral R H Leir
- Leir tells of when HMS Prince of Wales fought the German Bismarck in
that great Battle involving the famous Fairey Swordfish .... in which action
the mighty HMS Hood disappeared before his eyes exploding in two pieces!.
Then he meets Roosevelt and Churchill in Placentia Bay before routing the
Italian Navy in the Mediterranean. But his good luck came to an end when
Prince of Wales and Repulse were sunk as the result of ineffective defence
against Japanese aircraft. Rescued at sea, he is headed back for Sub-Lieutenants’
courses but whilst enroute in Ceylon, he joins HMS Exeter to fill a vacancy
… temporarily!
In Part Two, the interview is of Robin Hayward, a survivor
of HMCS Athabaskan who became a prisoner of the German Kreigsmarine.
