BRITISH & COMMONWEALTH AIRCRAFT TYPES WW1

Royal Navy Aircraft Serials and Units 1911-1919. By Ray Sturtivant and Gordon Page; Air Britain; ISBN: 0851301916. RRP:
Detailed reference work of the Royal Navy Aircraft Serials and Units 1911-1919. Probably the most ambitious project of its nature ever attempted, this work provides complete or near complete histories of over 15,000 aircraft flown by the Royal Naval Air Service from 1911 and by successor units of the Royal Air Force from 1 April 1918 until the end of 1919. It also lists their squadrons, units and bases. There are details of numerous attempts by coastal aircraft to bomb U-boats around the coast of Britain, and of land-based naval aircraft making hazardous night flights to help stem the Zeppelin menace. The many individual incidents include Major Barker's dramatic fight in October 1918 when, despite his Sopwith Snipe being riddled with bullets as he came down, he managed to account for four enemy aircraft before making a crash landing from which he and his aircraft survived, for which unique exploit he was awarded a well merited Victoria Cross.

The Camel File by Ray Sturtivant and Gordon Page. Air Britain Publication.
Royal Navy Aircraft : Since 1945 Flown from mid-1917 by the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Naval Air Service and the later the Royal Air Force, the Sopwith Camel was one of the foremost Allied fighters during the latter part of the first World War. With hundreds of victories to its credit, it was flown by many famous names of the period. Developed from the Sopwith Pup, it was to serve with twenty front line squadrons on the Western Front and in Italy, and was still in full service at the Armistice. Appendices include comprehensive details of the squadrons and other units with which the Camel served, as well as its use by other air forces, and a detailed index contains the names of nearly 3,000 Camel pilots.

The S.E.5 File. Air Britain Publication.
In many ways, the Sopwith Camel and the S.E.5 could be regarded as the First World War equivalents of the Spitfire and Hurricane. The S.E.5 originated in the second half of 1916, to meet the requirement for a faster and more manoeuvrable single-seat fighter. Designed by the Royal Aircraft Factory at Farnborough, it went into large scale production. Details of the service of the S.E.5 and S.E.5A are backed by extensive tables of individual histories including the men who flew the type, their victories and losses. Three pages of general arrangement drawings, a cut-away drawing and eight pages of colour drawings showing various  markings carried by the type should be useful to modellers.

BRITISH & COMMONWEALTH NAVAL AIRCRAFT TYPES WWII

Fleet Air Arm Aircraft 1939 to 1945. By Ray Sturtivant with Mick Burrow. Air Britain (Historians) Ltd; ISBN: 0851302327. Our Price: £. RRP:
A companion work to 'The Squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm', this is the first comprehensive listing ever undertaken of the aircraft flown by the Royal Navy in the Second World War. Many years of research have gone into compiling this work, which reveals just how varied and widespread were the activities of the Fleet Air Arm at its highest strength. The entries are on similar lines to those in 'Royal Navy Aircraft Serials and Units 1911 to 1919'. As with the earlier work, the tables are not just a simple listing of serial numbers and squadrons, but include known dates of service with units, code markings and also a vast amount of other information on various types of incident such as accidents, air combat victories and U-boat attacks. Details of all known wartime naval aircraft fatalities and prisoners of war are given. The whole work runs to 512 pages, with 200 photographs and a comprehensive index to around 8,000 names of people of varied ranks included in the lists, many of whom were from Commonwealth navies.

The Harvard File. By John F. Hamlin. Air Britain (Historians) Ltd. ISBN: 0851301606 . Our Price: £.  RRP:
Back in the dark days of 1938, the British Government under Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain at last woke up to the inevitability of conflict with Germany and the need to build up very rapidly a Royal Air Force which would stand a chance of dealing with the situation. The  British aircraft industry was, not surprisingly, quite unable to cope with the high volume output suddenly and belatedly demanded of it, and it was therefore decided that aircraft of certain categories should be procured in the United States of America. To carry out this plan, the British Purchasing Commission was armed; it left for Washington in April 1938, complete with a budget of $25 million, which is not much in the aviation world now but was a great deal then. The first of the three aircraft types which the BPC selected that year was an advanced trainer, the North American NA-49. By the time the BPC placed their order more than 400 aircraft had already rolled off the production line for the USAAC, as well as many for export. No major problems were expected, therefore, when the first aircraft, serialled N7000, arrived in England and was taken on charge at the Aeroplane & Armament Experimental Establishment at Martlesham Heath on 3 December 1938 so that a programme of testing could be carried out and Pilots' Notes prepared.

So began the long life-story of the Harvard in British military service, a story which has by no means ended yet. In 'The Harvard File' the Author has restricted himself to dealing with the histories of the 4760 Harvards which carried British military serial numbers.

The Swordfish Story by Ray Sturtivant. Cassell Military; ISBN: 0304357111. Our
Price: £16.00.
This book describes the plane that outlived its intended successors and recorded outstanding feats of naval air action. The 'Stringbag' was one of the most remarkable aircraft of the Second World War, a relatively slow, biplane design in an age of monoplanes. But it outlived its supposed successor and earned legendary battle honours in so doing - Norway, the Bismarck attack, Taranto and the 'Channel Dash' operations.  Perhaps the most remarkable aspect in cementing this book as the definitive study are the appendixes - an epic feat of enthusiastic research. These include: full specifications
for the variants of Swordfish; the names of all squadrons fully or partly equipped with Swordfish including RAF and RCAF users; an impressive directory of all known
Swordfish losses; and a list of all individual aircraft histories - a staggering feat of meticulous detailed research.

F-6F Hellcat in Action by Jim Sullivan. Squadron / Signal Publications; ISBN: 0897470885. Our Price: £7.99.
The F6F Hellcat is one of those unfortunate planes which, in it's day, was overshadowed by it's siblings. Just as the Hawker Hurricane will forever be seen as second best to the Supermarine Spitfire, so the F6F Hellcat will always be seen as "not quite as good" as Chance Vought's Corsair. But the F6F's combat score in the Pacific should have ensured it's No 1 billing outscoring it's Japanese foes by a staggering 19 to 1 kill ratio, far better than any other fighter, before or since. This Squadron/Signal book pays ample tribute to the machine and its service in the Pacific conflict and is very well illustrated in the usual style of this series. Line drawings and close up photography together with the centre page colour illustrations make this a valuable contribution to the fighter which all F6F fans know won the Pacific War by breaking the back of the Japanese Naval Air Arm.

Helldiver Units of World War 2 (Combat Aircraft), by Barrett Tillman . Rank and File Publishers; ISBN:1855326892. Our Price: £12.84
The Curtiss Helldiver made its service debut on November 1943, flying from the deck of USS Bunker Hill. Hated by aircrews, it was still the most numerous Allied dive-bomber of World War II destroying more Japanese targets than any other dive-bomber. More aircraft were lost in deck landing accidents than to enemy action and combat crews grimly joked that its designation SB2C stood for "Son of a Bitch, 2nd Class". This volume charts the history of the plane from its first days in action through to VJ-Day. Unit histories are included, plus appendices covering unit dispositions and locations.

Curtiss Sb2C Helldiver. By Peter C. Smith. ASIN: 1861261411. Our Price: $44.95
Another much-maligned aircraft, the Helldiver made a major contribution to the successful outcome of the Pacific War and fought hard against the Communists in Indo-China with the French Navy. Here now for the first time, is the complete history, including design, construction and the many modifications subsequently found needed during testing of this, the US Navy's major dive bomber of the 1944-48 period. Although the "Big Tailed Beast" proved quite a handful for the Curtiss team to tame and ready for combat, when she did eventually join the fleet for the final drive on Japan the SB2C proved her worth, debuting with the attack on Rabaul, she fought at the battles of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf, helped destroy the Yamato and Musashi, the most powerful battleships ever built, and then took the war to the Inland Sea and the Tokyo Plain to finish off the Japanese Navy. Post-war she continued to serve as the only bomber in the fleet until replaced by the Douglas Skyraider, but she also saw much more action with the French Navy at Dien Bien Phu were here accuracy was legendary.
