| Pursuit:
The Chase and Sinking of the Bismarck. by Ludovic Kennedy . ISBN:
0304355267. Cassell Military; Our Price: £5.59 |
 |
The
role of U-boats in the action is covered in this re-issue of Ludovic Kennedy's
history.
In May 1941, the
German battleship Bismarck headed out into the North Atlantic to raid Allied
shipping. She was accompanied by the Prinz Eugen and her pursuit was an
epic of naval warfare. Found and shadowed by British cruisers, she was
engaged by the Hood and the Prince of Wales. Within minutes, she had sunk
the Hood, pride of the Royal Navy, and damage the latter. The next few
days were agonising for both sides. The Bismarck was attacked by Swordfish
of the Fleet Air Arm, lost then relocated, attacked once more and disabled.
Now there was no choice for the pride of the Kriegsmarine but to run for
safety and the French port of Brest. But then the battleships Rodney and
King George V caught up with her.

| U-boats
Destroyed. By Paul Kemp. Cassell Military; ISBN: 1854095153 Our Price:
£11.99 |
 |
A record
of all the German submarines lost in both World War I and World War II.
Naval historian Paul Kemp examines all theatres of action and losses incurred
in harbour and during construction. The cause of loss is always quoted
where known. U-boats Destroyed is an excellent first class reference book
for researchers or/and authors requiring information on all class of U-boats
from the beginning of WW1 until the end of WW2. For its size, 288 pages,
it gives adaquate details of how most vessels were lost and the ones which
don't, is usually because only the unfortunate crew on board would have
known what actually happened to her in her final moments of destruction.
The author not only gives the U-boats builders, when and where she was
built, etc., but describes how when and where the submarine was lost in
a reasonable amount of detail, plus how many crew died or survived.
