Handbook, 1914-1918. By Peter G Cooksley. Sutton Publishing; ISBN: 0750921692.
Our Price: £15.19. RRP: |
 |
In the late 19th century,
aviation was dismissed by some military personnel as a waste of time. But,
by 1912 the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) had been formed, combining the Air
Battalion of the Royal Engineers and the Naval Air Organization. Two years
later, just one month before the outbreak of World War I, the Royal Naval
Air Service (RNAS) was created as an idependent unit. This work explores
the contributions made by the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air
Service during World War I in this highly illustrated text. As well as
the aircraft, a numerous array of other subjects is covered, including
organization, pay, rank, uniforms, motor vehicles, the women's branches,
attitudes, and even songs popular in the mess.

| Royal
Navy Aircraft Serials and Units 1911-1919. By Ray Sturtivant and Gordon
Page; Air Britain; ISBN: 0851301916. RRP: |
 |
Detailed
reference work of the Royal Navy Aircraft Serials and Units 1911-1919.
Probably the most ambitious project of its nature ever attempted, this
work provides complete or near complete histories of over 15,000 aircraft
flown by the Royal Naval Air Service from 1911 and by successor units of
the Royal Air Force from 1 April 1918 until the end of 1919. It also lists
their squadrons, units and bases. There are details of numerous attempts
by coastal aircraft to bomb U-boats around the coast of Britain, and of
land-based naval aircraft making hazardous night flights to help stem the
Zeppelin menace. The many individual incidents include Major Barker's dramatic
fight in October 1918 when, despite his Sopwith Snipe being riddled with
bullets as he came down, he managed to account for four enemy aircraft
before making a crash landing from which he and his aircraft survived,
for which unique exploit he was awarded a well merited Victoria Cross.

| The
Camel File by Ray Sturtivant and Gordon Page. Air Britain Publication. |
 |
Flown
from mid-1917 by the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Naval Air Service and
the later the Royal Air Force, the Sopwith Camel was one of the foremost
Allied fighters during the latter part of the first World War. With hundreds
of victories to its credit, it was flown by many famous names of the period.
Developed from the Sopwith Pup, it was to serve with twenty front line
squadrons on the Western Front and in Italy, and was still in full service
at the Armistice. Appendices include comprehensive details of the squadrons
and other units with which the Camel served, as well as its use by other
air forces, and a detailed index contains the names of nearly 3,000 Camel
pilots.

| The
S.E.5 File. Air Britain Publication. |
 |
In
many ways, the Sopwith Camel and the S.E.5 could be regarded as the First
World War equivalents of the Spitfire and Hurricane. The S.E.5 originated
in the second half of 1916, to meet the requirement for a faster and more
manoeuvrable single-seat fighter. Designed by the Royal Aircraft Factory
at Farnborough, it went into large scale production. Details of the service
of the S.E.5 and S.E.5A are backed by extensive tables of individual histories
including the men who flew the type, their victories and losses. Three
pages of general arrangement drawings, a cut-away drawing and eight pages
of colour drawings showing various markings carried by the type should
be useful to modellers.

the Teeth of the Wind : The Story of a Naval Pilot on the Western Front
1916-1918. By Squadron Leader C.P.O. Bartlett, Nick Bartlett (Editor).
United States Naval Institute; ISBN: 1557503931 Our Price: RRP: |
 |
This
book is the war journal of a naval aviator who flew 101 combat missions
over and around the Belgian coast, first reporting to what was known as
5 Wing RNAS during September of 1916. This unit became 5 Squadron RNAS
in December of that year, and was known as such until becoming 205 Squadron
RAF in April of 1918. This remarkably well-written journal covers the entire
period of 5 Squadron's operation, and preserves the history of that unit
in an easily read style. There are many war journals in publication, but
this one is a bit different since 5 Squadron was basically a bombing squadron.
Most of the author's missions were flown in the DH-4 two-seater, and his
harshest criticism is reserved for those pursuit pilots who were less than
diligent when on escort duty. The book includes first person comparisons
of the handling qualities of many different aircraft of the period, including
captured enemy aircraft, and a few single seaters that the author flew
on rare occasions.
